Probably something to do with fleeing for their lives in the middle of the night with nothing but the clothes on their back.

There are so many reasons they don't get on a plane. We don't take enough people. The process takes too long. As a signatory to the United Nations convention we are actually meant to take genuine refugees so they get on a boat because it's all they can do to make their family safe. They aren't reading the news they don't know Australia will turn the boat back. They are scared and desperate. They have watched their families die around them.

    Desperate people do desperate acts.

Watch the series. Even the most cold hearted refugee bashers cried when they watched it. And I'm not saying you are but it answers so many of your questions.

Because they don't have a visa and therefore the airline won't let them on the plane.

Edit: Maybe if a process could be established where people could get a special 'asylum seeker' visa or something and fly here that might work. No sure. It's so complicated.

The only country between Australia and Afghanistan that is a signatory to the refugee convention is Cambodia whose human rights record is very questionable.

To the north east is China. The Middle East is a mess.

The difference between arriving by boat and arriving by plane is that plane arrivals are not going to result in deaths at sea.

What difference does it make if I quote an excerpt or post a graph from Wikipedia if the data from Wikipedia is consistent with the "more reliable" sources you have provided? The article you referenced doesn't negate anything i have stated. It's just additional information which isn't relevant to my argument that dismantling the pacific solution resulted in an increase in boat arrivals, which had horrific consequences.

Are you arguing that most of these people are genuine refugees? I have already stated that. Are you trying to say that regardless of the method of arrival, the processing of asylum seekers is inhuman? I've already stated that too. What are you trying to argue?
Seriously, you were the one telling people earlier in the thread to "not rely on biased media articles" and "look at factual information" like journals and RBA data but then you go and quote wiki? Come on! Are you aware that anyone can edit Wikipedia? Your exert from Wikipedia said that only 68% of asylum seekers were genuine. That is the bit I was disagreeing with.

You may be concerned with the deaths at sea of people trying to come here by boat but you can't convince anyone that Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison cared about the welfare of these people.

In witherwings defence I don't think she was trying to convince anyone that the government cared..? She just found some data that I'd requested? I have found withwings attitude very peasant to refugees in this thread and she comes across as someone who genuinely cares and is trying to understand.

I think you're trying to make an enemy of someone who is an allie.

Closely followed by overstayers from the UK, US and China. And they arrive by plane. And just don't go home. But no one seems worried about them.

Not true. NZers can stay in Australia as long as they like and get jobs here. They don't need a visa.
