But it's not that surprising is it? We've been heading this way for a while now, starting with the Howard years when the fear of foreigners (dark ones) began. His tolerance, encouragement and acceptance of racism fanned fires that hadn't been seen for decades.

And it's just grown since then. I'm not surprised by this one bit. Saddened yes, surprised no.

We have a church being built on a main road near us with a cross out the front about 5 metres high. No one cares. Imagine if it was a mosque? My god the outrage would be felt over the entire city.

The reason Hanson got in is bc not only did she get the usual bogan vote, I suspect she's got the religious one. Bc it's more than ok to take a Muslim's rights, to try to extinguish their religious freedoms but anyone dares even criticise the very Christians demanding these changes and they are screeching persecution and whining about how their beliefs aren't respected.

I'm tempted to start a spin off thread about how to squash racism. I think most of it stems from ignorance, mis-information and fear mongering. It makes me so angry and sad.

But it *is* that surprising for me. Where I live it's basically a Caucasian monoculture. There aren't the same tensions here that there are in other parts of Australia.

My understanding was it was the usual sort of vocal minority that have been protesting this ****e for decades.

I had no idea Hanson was even running until like 10 days ago. So yeah. It is a big surprise for me that a) she would run again and b) enough people would vote for her party for them to get multiple seats.

    Default Election 2016

The people who voted for Pauline Hanson (mostly rural Qld) have probably never met a Muslim in their lives.

I don't know who said it earlier but we do have a Muslim in the lower house who just got voted in for his third term and he swore on the Quran. http://m.smh.com.au/federal-politics...701-2p8l2.html

ETA actually the point that really makes me sad is the last one. I mean, what possible reason is there for that??
Because Islam is not a religion apparently *rolls eyes*

I've spent the last 15 years in incredibly white and tolerant neighbourhoods. But one of the firms I worked at years ago did work for the migrant law centre so I've been aware of the growing racism. So many people look back on the Howard years with so much fondness but he really was such a dreadful racist person who made this country scared of foreigners.

I don't believe there are men in Australia claiming Centrelink benefits for multiple wives, regardless of their religion. How would that even work? You have one CRN and Centrelink aren't going to have multiple wives on record for you. Polygyny is illegal in Australia, regardless of what your religion is.

And there are plenty of non-religious people or non-Muslims scamming Centrelink, it's not fair to think that only Muslim people would do this (get benefits they aren't entitled to), or that they would do it at all. In my occupation I have come across so many people who, for example, claim single parent payments when they are actually still with their partners and living together.
