Barney is a long time friend and quite close.

I think you could be right here. Barney is not really in the position to be narky, as he has declined many events simply because it wasn't something that interested him (even if it's a significant event for a friend).

I don't think Barney is out of line or being narky. I think he just honestly thinks you really should go. Whether you agree with him or not doesn't make his comment rude.

I don't particularly think you should have to go, but I'm a bit of a home body.

Since Barney is a close friend then I would take the comment for what it was and not stress about it. Then as he is such a close friend I would say ' well you know me, seriously cbf going all that way and all that hassle, you know we're not that close'

I have no contribution to the thread, I'm just impressed at hearing someone saying "throws shade".

That was my first reaction when I saw the thread. I thought, "this thread is lit AF".

I am not sure what I think. For me it depends on the specifics surrounding the previous friendship between the person turning 40 and the person who has ditched the party. If they were once close and/or the person turning 40 is going through a rough time I could possibly think Barney was ok giving the ditcher a hard time. If not, maybe Barney is a little out of line. But not by that much.

Maybe Barney knows the party will be legen.....wait for it.........dary.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I don't think he is necessarily out of line for saying it if he's a good friend. But if you decline and he continues to hassle you, then that is out of line. I'd just say "yeah, I know friend came to mine, but for XYZ reasons, I just can't right now" and leave it at that.
