    Default FIL giving baby food

So today my FIL gave my not quite 4 month old DD a cracker with dip on it! I just stared in shock! We've never given her solids and wanted to wait until she's 6 months. Plus we wanted to be the first to give her food I'm possibly over reacting but I'm really peeved off and needed to vent!

My MIL did this to my niece I think she was 6 months old but it was chocolate cake!! SIL understandably got pretty upset. MIL now always asks before giving our kids anything!

I don't think that generation understand that parenting has changed since the 70s. My mum thought I was 'starving' my then 5 month old DS1 because I only breastfed and didn't offer him formula. Like he was somehow missing out?!

He gives my 18mo niece cake, muffins, cordial, awful processed foods and other junk! We are vegetarians and will be raising DD as one too. I wouldn't put it past him to slip her a chicken nugget. My PIL are lovely but they definitely have different views on nutrition. I foresee a few battle.

My mum let my daughter suck on a Tim tam or Mint slice when she was about 3 months old, I was horrified and grabbed it out of mums hand and threw it away lol. It sucks when someone else steals one of your "firsts" or does something completely against your parenting style but unfortunately you get used to it. I'd firmly say "we're not giving solids until 6 months and then it will only be whole foods until we decide to offer anything else, so please check with me before feeding her/him anything"

Thanks. Yeh we definitely have to have the chat. Honestly I thought it was a given that you wouldn't just feed someone else's baby but obviously not.

Definitely not for the older generation! Also who knows what allergies a baby who has never had solids before might have?! You just wouldn't risk having a reaction on your shoulders!

This would upset me a lot for a few different reasons. You are not overreacting. Can I make a suggestion tho..... You totally SHOULD over react! I would make a polite but very BIG deal about this with the PIL's. In my experience it is a good idea to set strict and firm boundaries early on. You can always relax your views and rules on these kind of things but if you are soft now the it can be difficult to rein them back in.m later. Good luck. X

Nope. A few people have DD food when she was 4-6 months old without asking me or DF.

Thanks guys. DP has just messaged MIL and said we were upset about it. Love them lots but we want them to check before feeding her in future. We will have another chat when we start solids and lay down some strict rules.
