Girl, Interrupted is an amazing movie, but very sad
    The Heat is hilarious
Orphan Black is a good show

OP I completely agree with your analysis and frustrations! On top of others already mentioned,

a league of their own is great (actually basically anything with geena Davis in it is a sign that you'll get strong female characters and storylines!),

    orphan black (Netflix),

outlander (lots of sex and violence but the female lead is strong and has agency, all the sex is from a female gaze too)

Cranford (BBC 18th century costume drama, revolves around domestic matters but that was the nature of the times, all the female characters are very well drawn)

I liked Juno - the story of a young girl who finds herself pregnant and decides she wants to adopt her baby out to a deserving couple. Her strength of character, as well as the strength of the Mother-to-be, was awesome.

Steel Magnolias was great too. It highlighted a real sisterhood among the women. It was really beautiful.

Looking through these lists, I'm starting to think it would be easier to just search certain actor's imdb lists; Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep, Sally Fields, Natalie Portman.. just to name a few.

I love The Fall with Gillian Anderson. It's a creepy show but she is such an awesome female lead.
