    Default Wwyd?

Daughter (9) received a $40 gift card for her birthday from her friend for Smiggle. We went out yesterday to finally buy things from there for her. She had the card in her purse, but on the way she realised she left it at the bus stop. I rang the bus depot and the train station to see if anybody had handed it in. Nothing. I also rang the police station, again... Nothing.
We got to the shopping centre and she was really upset. I gave her $10 so she could at least buy something for now..
Part of me thinks I shouldn't replace the money as it was her own fault for being careless (she's often losing things), but another part of me is hurt for her.
I can't replace/give her $30 now as I don't hsve a lot of money this week but I was thinking of giving her $10 each fortnight (she gets pocket money of $20 a month anyway)..
What would you do? She's upset (well she's happy now she bought something for $10) but she's still upset about losing her gift card.
Also the purse it was in was a lovely purse her step-grandma got her from overseas (HongKong). I'm annoyed at that part. :/

Nothing. It's a life lesson. We all do it!

    I'm a softie. I'd replace the money.

Yes it's a life lesson but honestly I think our kids get loads of life lessons (or maybe just mine). I'm forever losing stuff so I don't get too cranky when my kids lose things.

She's a kid. Personally I never let my kids have their own gift cards for this reason. I hold on to them until we have to hand them over to spend.

I probably would have given her $20 for the trip & said you will replace half of what she had lost. Half life lesson, half still being a kid & able to spend some birthday money.

Silly question but have you checked the bus stop? Probably a long shot I know but it could be your lucky day!

I would replace it this time and have a new rule that you (the parent) holds on to the gift cards until it's time to hand over to the shop assistant.

I probably would have done the same as you OP. A token amount to spend seeing as you went all the way there before you realised.

My kids have lost gift cards before, I have not replaced them. This was after me explaining to them that I should hold onto them for safe keeping, and they carried on about it and demanded they keep them. Oh well tough titties I say.

Yes we checked the bus stop. It's not there.
I know it's a life lesson/natural consequence. I just feel bad for her.
I'm almost broke until pay day (next week) so could barely even afford to give her the $10.
Partner is away til tomorrow too so he can't give money (plus he thinks he/I shouldn't).

I think if you've tried to take them from them and they've insisted then that's different. Even then tho I still hold onto them. I know my kids and their attention spans.

And I said I should keep the gift card with me but she insisted on keeping it. She was pretty good until we left the bus stop.
