For us we don't have a choice as he isn't going to be 5 before 31st July (his bday is in October) so he will be starting the same year that he turns 6. However if he was turning 5 in July and I was writing this post about him 3 months ago, I would have said he definitely isn't ready to start big school. He is in a preschool program at childcare and doing really well. He needs this year to mature emotionally and socially as well as learn some basic things that I think most kindy children already know. Having said that, I know children his age who are far more emotionally and academically advanced, so it really is dependant on what your child is like.
