Default Getting a childrens book published??

Was unsure if this is the right place to put this but thought I would reach more people here.

Does anyone have any information on how to go about writing and publishing a childrens story?? I've always loved writing and having a background in childcare I'm especially passionate about childrens books. I have written a few stories but never done anything with them. Would love to know how you go about writing it in the proper form and trying to get published? Also if there are any courses you can take to get better knowledge in the subject of writing and becoming an author??

Thanks in advance lovely ladies 😆

There are heaps of courses out there. And there are a lot of free courses online (check pinterest for courses for writers). Some tafes offer courses. I know there are uni subjects on writing children's literature - but unsure if you can access this through a short course or whether you would need to do them through a degree.

Are you interested in children's picture books, or more along the lines of something for older children?

I don't know about the rest... but if no one else can help you, I'll have a chat to my friend who used to work in publishing (albeit with a completely different genre), and see if she can help with information.

Thanks tiny dancer. I'm interested in doing picture books. I just can't seem to find much info on how they like them presented and what the initial steps up to finding a publisher.

Hmmmm...... I'll see if I can get on to my friend and ask her if she knows. I'm not entirely sure she will know, because she was working for a romance publisher, so a different layout. It may take a while to get in contact with her though. She is the sort of person who always has something on, and finding time for phone calls is hard!

I used to work with authors (I am a designer) and from what I gather it's extremely difficult to get your book published unless you are willing to self publish which costs a bomb. Even really successful authors have had a multitude of publishers turn them down before they were successful. You need to know someone in the industry who can refer you otherwise you're among thousands they get to look at each week.

But as I said it is possible to self publish but you will need to pay for it all yourself and do all the leg work to convince stores to stock your book etc. I would be doing as much networking as you possibly can and make use of any contacts you have. Best of luck! 😊

You could potentially look into publishing ebooks?

I know of someone who has self published picture books through Amazon. She's kind of a friend of a friend though so I don't really know any other details but hopefully that will give you a starting point?
