Default TTC for 5 years. Anyone else in the same situation?

    Hi ladies!

DH (28) & I (27) have been TTC for 5 years now - absolutely nothing has happened We've charted temps, done tests and the doctors have given us so many mixed results.
I was diagnosed with PCOS & Endo (which I thought was impossible) but I would have thought that by now we would have had at least one positive. My DH had his levels tested and turns out they are low, we're going for more tests this week for a second opinion. We've been booked in for an appointment with a FS but that's not until July.

Question is, has anyone else been in my situation all? I feel really alone & not sure who to talk to. It's so frustrating & I want answers but unsure of the process. Once we see the FS, what usually happens?

    Thanks so much for reading

    xxxx

Hi Daisy, welcome. There are lots of ladies in the same boat as you unfortunately. There's a lovely thread "long term TTC" or similar that you could search for that I was in. I have pcos and had secondary infertility and after a very long road had my daughter after 4 years of TTC through IVF.
The FS will order any tests they feel you need and haven't had yet possibly blood test, ultrasound, AMH, hycosy etc
Then they discuss your options such a monitored medicated cycles such as on clomid or IUI or IVF etc.
You can sometimes be encouraged to have a counselling appointment and also one with a nurse if you are starting meds. Sending lots of baby dust, I'll try to link the long term TTC thread if I can x

So sorry to hear you're in this situation @DaisyGirl88 it's horribly frustrating when it feels like you can't figure out exactly what's wrong.

Have your thyroid levels (and antibodies) been checked? That's a common one that can cause issues too.

The FS will do further testing for you as Bel said and offer some options they recommend as the best course of action from here. I have mild PCOS and Hashimotos and my DH's results weren't fantastic either, but our FS thought we should have at least had some success in the time we'd been trying too. When we started IVF we found out that my egg and his sperm literally do not communicate. Perfectly healthy egg and perfectly healthy sperm, but they wouldn't bind together so that the sperm could penetrate the egg! That's something we never would have been able to predict or figure out without trying IVF. Through IVF ICSI we were able to get the sperm into the egg and I'm now pregnant from our very first transfer.

My point is I guess, sometimes there's issues that the usual first lot of fertility testing just can't pinpoint. You are both still young so time is definitely on your side and any fertility treatments have a higher chance of success for you. I know how hard it is to wait for that first FS appointment when it almost feels like you're just "wasting time". We had to wait 3 months to get in too. During that time I started taking some supplements to help build my egg quality (like COQ10) and DH started doing the same for his sperm quality (like Menevit). His results were much better by the time we got to the FS appointment. It at least made me feel like we were doing something constructive to work towards the next step

    Hi @DaiseyGirl88

DH & I are currently at 4 years and counting. During that time we only had one positive that ended in an ectopic at 7 weeks.

If you want to chat, feel free to PM me.

I wasnt trying for a long time but I do have PCOS so opted to see a FS after about 8 months of not conceiving which was the best thing I could have done... My FS was amazing anything and everything she could have test me for she did and then after about a month of doing blood test checking my tubes etc she put me on metaformin + clomid and I conceived that month and currently 13 weeks.. My fingers are crossed for you and I hope you get some answers from the FS

Welcome and you are NOT alone!

First thing I would do is book a fertility specialist once you get a referral from your GP and have necessary tests done to understand what steps you need to take with your partner in order to maximize your chances.

Don't waste time trying without seeking specialised help. We have done the same and all it did is make us anxious, stressed and frustrated.

best of luck and hang in there!

Hi Daisy, I'm so sorry it's been a long journey for you. It's the most difficult thing I've ever been through.

It took us 4.5 years to conceive dd & I think we only got there because we opted for ivf. Like you I had pcos & endo. I had surgery to remove some of the endo before we tried clomid & then ivf.

That's great you have an appointment with a FS coming up. Make sure you write down any questions you might have. Good luck, I hope it all goes well. Oh & there are lots of ladies on here that either have been or are going through the same thing. I didn't have anyone in real life going through the same thing. I found the understanding & support on here incredible. Especially on days where I just needed to vent.
