    Great thank you :-)
I've always been one to go well if its a then it should have his fathers name so he can carry it on. This time in this situation the father of the baby is an only child and so is his mother so buck starts to stop but in saying that he might have more children later where as myself I feel this will be my last. So now really starting to question if that's really how I feel I was with my sons dad and we were getting married so I thought one day I'd have his name to but hmmm
Thanks heaps lady's given me a lot more to think about then when I originally posted

My friend has three kids. First born has different dad to the other two. But they all have hyphenated surnames...mums-dads. So obviously the mum bit is the same but dad's is different. It Links the siblings nicely but also dad's name is 'carried on' too.
Personally, if my child had never had anything to do with their bio father I would just change their surname to mine only and give other kids from new relationship the hyphenated name. :-)

My DD1 currently has only her Dads surname, however we have mutually agreed since I am married with a second DD than her surname will the same as myself, DH & DD2, and her fathers surname will become a second middle name. I didn't want her to be the only one without that name, and broached the subject of hyphenating her surname with her father but he actually suggested having my DHs surname instead. He is in and out of her life.

Also from my understanding, if the father wants his surname and pushes the issue to court, they will end up hyphenating. Something to keep in mind.
