    I too wouldn't be released from Telstra early, I had two months left in my contract and my phone was dying, i wanted a new phone on the same planet but they still wouldn't say yes. I got on to Telstra chat and basically pleaded with them that after being a customer for 21yrs with two kids and a phone that didn't work surely they could find it in their business minds to allow me to upgrade without paying the pro rata fee. Finally common sense prevailed but I had to go in and get my new phone before they would apply the credit but they stuck to their word.

    I have always been able to upgrade 12 weeks before my plan finished with telstra.

    Not phone related just more Telstra related. I am in the country and can't get broadband. Paying through the nose for mobile data.

    Complained on phone: bad info and not helpful
    Complained on Facebook: useless idiots
    Complained in shop: sympathetic but couldn't do anything outside of plans. They just set up the best plan for my needs.
    Complained in email: they rang back and gave me more data for free and knocked $10 off my monthly bill.

    Moral of the story being: keep trying till you get someone with common sense

    I believe if you complain about the outages they also have to let you out of your plan
