    Default nicknames/alternate names

How often does it happen that you name your child something and end up calling them by the middle name, or always by a nickname?

My cousin's name is Leslie Ashe, but she's been called Ashe her whole life. I always wondered why they didn't make it her first name in the first place!

I also know an Alexander who is only known as Xandy. It really suits him! Then again, I know another Alexander who flat out refuses to be called anything BUT Alexander, not even Alex! There's a few Benjamins like that as well.

(These are 7-year-olds I'm talking about.)

Anyway what's your opinion on alternate names?

That is the same with TJ. From 4 months pregnant he/she was going to be TJ regardless of the sex.

we call our son by a nickname. DS is named after his father Richard so we call our son RJ which is short for Richard Junior.

I don't HATE nicknames, but when it comes to naming my own kids I prefer them to have names you can't shorten, I occasionally call Hayley Hayles but not that ofen, if this baby is a girl she will be named Skye (can't really shorten that) I think MAYBE some ppl might ask if its short for Skylar but I don't know how many. If its a boy, I like Nathan but I can't stand Nathaniel or Nate (Nath is ok though).

My name is Cassie and I ALWAYS get asked if its short for Cassandra (which it isn't) and it gets annoying when I have to explain my name (my dad wanted me to named Cassandra, but my mum's name is Sandra and she told him it sounds too close so they opted for just Cassie coz mum said that everyone would just name me that anyway). Make sense?

I wouldn't name my child Sam (boy or girl) even though I like that name (for both genders) coz ppl would always ask if it was short for Samantha or Samuel etc and believe me, it gets annoying.

My kids all have their nicknames lol.

Logan's real name is Gordon Logan, coz it sounds better than Logan Gordon, but we always intended to call him Logan. Usually he's called Boo or Booey though lol.

Gussie is Angus, but he's usually Gus, or Gussie, or Gussie McGhee (we always intended to use Gus)

Eire can't be shortened very well, but i often call her Eirey, or Eirey Fairy.
    Logan - 20/6/2004
    Angus - 30/6/2005
    Eire - 7/9/2006
    Declan - 2/3/2008
Finnegan - Born at home on land - 7/8/2009
Flora Mary Elizabeth - Born at home in water - 10/2/2011

not all of my kids have nick names, but my nan (may she rest in peace) use to call Shawn "Shawny Pawny" and change the words of georgie porgie to shawny pawny which was so cute. Connor and Caleb dont have nicknames as such but Saxon has two. My nephew calls him Saxamaphone and I call him boogaloo.

My middle name is Marie and for many years growing up I was only ever called 'Ree' by my family. That is until Miss Independent at age 9 or 10 started telling everyone to call me by my 'proper' name (first name).

When considering names for our DS (or DD if we had a girl) we made sure we liked the shortened versions because we figured we'd end up abbreviating it along the way.

Simone started calling Chloe CoCo because she couldn't pronounce Chloe, the name stuck and now we all call her that. Simone has always been called Simi, my nephew started it when she was 1 day old and we liked it too. The only time the girls really get called their proper names now is if they are in trouble, although when we meet people for the first time we always introduce our girls as Chloe and Simone, not CoCo and Simi.
