This scares me because we are about to move in to a house with gas heating for the first time. I have no idea what I'm in for!

We didn't either. We had gas for the water as well. When we got our first bill, we hadn't yet started using the heating. After our first bill we decided to not use gas heating much. Could you maybe take a meter read, and then check it after a couple of weeks and call the provider and get an estimate of cost for that based off the reads? Don't know if they'll do that.
