    Default Am I being unreasonable

My FIL has an Olive Grove. It's a hobby farm so there's no hired help. It's olive harvesting time and I thought we were coming out to visit to celebrate the occasion with FIL and his wife. They've put a lot of years and hardwork into this place as has my DH.

When my DH suggested this visit I stated that I thought a visit would be nice but I didn't want to be hanging around picking olives in the Qld heat with my ds (nearly) 4 and 22 mo dd in tow.

So, we're visiting now. Had a nice lunch and now here I sit with my kids, amongst rows of olive trees, long grass, penetrating sun and bored crazy kids whilst dh, FIL etc pick olive trees.

    Is my annoyance unreasonable?

In this case yes. You chose to go during Olive harvesting time. What did you really think was going to happen? Can you take the kids inside ? Why do you have to be outside with the kids?

Ummm... yes - kinda unreasonable. What exactly were you expecting to happen though? And I am sure your 4yo would love helping.

I just wanted to say I feel your pain, my DP is from a farming family and I am not. Whenever we visit his family we are expected to stay with them and he is put to work and I have nothing to do.
I now know to expect this and don't mind so much, but when his family visit us they expect to stay with us and put my DP to work around his own home, ha!

I don't think you are being unreasonable if you made your expectations clear before you agreed to go.

Yeah a bit unreasonable sorry. I think being outdoors among rows of olive trees picking fruit would be a fun little novelty.
If you're hot and bothered, say so, and go inside.

My inlaws only live 10mins away but when we go over there for dinner DH always gets roped into helping with something on the farm.

You have every right to feel bored. Annoyed - not sure about that.

Either way time to do something about it... Don't sit there and let it fester. Go pick an olive or play hide and seek with the kids. Or put a Disney movie on.

Plan alternative activities in advance with kids whenever you suspect the afternoon may be a dud!
