My boy was jaundice too and I was also told to feed more often and also to express and top up with formula. Once it cleared he was only bf.

I would listen to the medical professionals who have advised you.

thanks for all the feedback, it's very reassuring to hear from others and what they did.

we got his blood test done and have since found out its within normal range (235 and abnormal is 280 plus). so thankfully we don't need to go back in tonight to have him watched.

the midwife who phoned back said to keep feeding him every 3 hours, expressed bm is preferred but formula to top up if we can't get the boob milk. bought a pump (medela swing) on way home so will give that a burl shortly but will hand express now to get some more food into him.

it's hard when you think you were giving him enough, because he was sending out cues that would suggest he was finished, then you find out its because the jaundice is making him sleepy and quiet, not a full tummy.

thanks for the support, much appreciated xx

Just to chime in, we had a slightly different situation as bub was premature and had ABO incompatibility jaundice but she was started on 2 hour feeds progressing to 3 then 4 hours over 2 weeks in special care nursery. She still had jaundice after 2 weeks. We were told by that stage to not let her go more than 4 hours between feeds. So if she was asleep we would wake her up. Also we fed one side then changed her nappy to wake her up then fed other side. If she was really sleepy we would strip her clothes down to just a nappy to wake her up a bit. I even used a wet flannel a couple of times.
My only concern would be if she is sleepy/lazy sucking then bottle feeding ebm may reinforce that so try and get her on breast as much as possible (if you want to BF rather than ebf long-term that is). Good luck with your little bub and congratulations!

Oh and make sure you use the stimulation (the first) two mins. It really helps the milk come down

ok gave it a go and it's great!! milk on left boob starting flowing before 2 minute stimulation cycle was completed. then switched to right boob. I think my left boob is producing more, I got way more out of the left than the right I think.

got so much out in a tiny space of time. going to try and get more before I go to bed but doubt I will, they feel quite empty.

That's great!! I've always struggled with milk production but I guess it's stress and not eating enough, I'm even on motillium. You've got it all sorted mumma!

If you ever need formula I've been using the karicare aptimil gold + ha and I've had no dramas with her having constipation or vomits

    Enjoy your swing
