Default Sort of spinoff - is trust earned or assumed?

As the question says - if you meet someone new do they enter your world with a full quota of trust to be lost, or an empty one to be filled? Somewhere in between?

Somewhere in between. I wouldn't trust them with my kids, but I don't think that everyone I meet is going to steal my wallet.

Oh that is such a good question. I want to believe someone is trustworthy straight away, that may naive or gullible of me, but they deserve to be trusted at first until they do wrong by me, then I know they aren't to be trusted. I guess it's a hard lesson, but I want to believe there are good people around.

As the PP mentioned, I wouldn't trust someone straight away with my children.

I tend to be in the middle but a bit more to the "don't trust - it needs to be earned" side. I wouldn't say I'm paranoid, but I do tend to be cautious.

this. I have a healthy amount of wariness/cynicism about people but I also don't believe everyone is out to rip me off or do me over.

I'm a pretty intuitive and perceptive person and get a gut feeling about a person pretty early on. if that gut feeling tells me to be wary, I listen to that. people do not automatically get my full trust until proven otherwise. this is probably some weird self preservation thing where I'm protecting myself.

it also depends on what you're trusting the person with. to watch my shopping for 5 minutes? yeah sure. to watch my baby (not that it's born yet lol)? no way.

I trust most people. No random person has ever hurt or upset me.

I wouldn't leave my kids with other strangers but oh hang on.... I send my kids to school and daycare with the full expectation they will be OK.

yes but school/daycare have a duty of care to protect your child. leaving your kid with a perfect stranger (not that you would), there's no duty of care. if something happens, it's just bad bloody luck.

Exactly. The OP didn't specify in what situation trust was to be earned.

Teachers/carers have a duty of care to their charges. We as citizens of the world have a duty of care to each other.

This. Tending more towards the trusting side. I like to believe the best of people and refuse to let experience beat that out of me. Though once you lose my trust, you will never get it again.
