I just fixed up one of the links, one is from ABC and the other SBS @Gen72 and @MamaKes emailed them through to me. It is weighing on my mind I might flick something off to them, yes they could fuzz me out and put one of those awful voice-overs on over my voice to disguise it. I would be interested in others opinions as maybe I interpreted them wrong just been my usual ultra sensitive self
@Maxwellsmum my take on it is that they are questioning the lawfulness of what they are doing here in Australia where our laws are strict about egg donation/non payment etc. The other question is whether these companies are just on a money grab in which desperate infertile couples are taken advantage of. There has been a bit of reporting recently about the IVF industry here so its possibly lead on from all that.
Look I think its valid for society to ask these questions, its partly about desperate couples wanting a baby but its also very much about the rights of the children who are born using donor eggs/sperm. There are loads of ethical questions which are continuously arising from all this and its a healthy attitude to look at them in detail.
One thing that is a little strange is that in the abc article they are talking like two individuals meet on the internet and they arrange for their other half of the "pair" to come over in this group. Isn't it a clinic in SA that has the list of donors that will travel and you choose who you want? Or have I got that wrong? It just sounds like they are assuming something else?

I have a problem with these statements:
"It is very problematic that people are literally being 'sold' the idea that this is a reasonable way to form a family," she said. (Not 'reasonable' hey??)
"Once you open the door to such trade, yes, there are problems. People desperate to have a baby are charged huge amounts of money to access treatments that have relatively unknown 'success' rates. (If they're a proven donor then yes, indeed we do know their success rates, plus I'm sure QFG's success rates are transparent!!)
"Young girls are transported across borders so that their eggs can be procured. The people profiting most are the agents, the industry."
I don't disagree with the profiteering bit though!! The rest I find offensive and inaccurate.

Maxwellsmum I totally understand where you're coming from re reaching out to the media. However I urge caution. I'm a journalist and have been in the media industry for 20 years plus. I deal with shows like ACA and ABC news regularly. Let's have a chat through pros and cons before you make any calls. Im meaning well by not wanting you to go ahead without giving you some advice. Xx
The first statement is offensive, those people clearly haven't been here and have no idea about infertility land.
But...it might not be the case in this instance that anything dodgy is happening but the reality is that it wouldn't be ridiculous to think that there could be young girls trafficked for their eggs, if its not already happening. Its not a stupid question and probably only a matter of time sadly. It is important that they make sure this stuff is ethical, and for everyone involved especially the recipients.
People can have such extreme stances on issues cant they until they are faced with the choice between nothing and having a child through donation. It sux
MamaKes yes I know, it would be good for people to understand the pain we go through to get to this point. I know I have to focus more on myself and my new cycle, my husband has vittoed me going to any media anyway as it is too risky as we really don't want anyone here knowing anything about what we are doing because of any fall out later on that may hurt our child/children as we are still undecided about if or when we will tell them. @Tahli yes "It is very problematic that people are literally being 'sold' the idea that this is a reasonable way to form a family," she said.... that bothered me too as for some people this in the ONLY way that they can form a family and don't we have a right to be parents as well. I mean drug addicts, pedo's, rapists, murderers, alcoholics, Michelle Bridges.... they can all have families.
@tuxcat I forgot to say only the ladies who are willing to be known donors are sent to us because of the Aus legilsation. They have a lot less ladies wanting to be known donors. We also sign into a contract too later on at some point.
