My DS when he was 8yo told me Santa must be real as he'd know (my DS that is) if we owned a sleigh!

Default WWYD? 7 year old daughter being told "Santa isn't real"

OP - my 7 year old DS came home and asked me if Santa was real as his friend with older siblings told him he wasn't (had nothing to do with religion) and I told him that all I know is that if you believe in him he continues to visit. He asked me why I never got presents from Santa (I never even thought to buy myself one from him!!) and I told him that I stopped believing in him a long time ago. He replied 'well I still believe in him'... He really does too. I'm happy for him to make the decision himself when he stops believing.

I haven't read all of the replies, but to be honest I don't understand why some people are bothered about the delivery of the message. Santa isn't real. It's a beautiful magical experience while it lasts and I'd love for my boys (my youngest is 4) to believe a while longer but I'm not bothered by what other kids tell them about it. My DS1 has been told a lot more than he'd ever know by this friend with older siblings - to the point that he asked me what drugs were. To be honest that opened my eyes a lot wider than the Santa questions.

I'm a parent and a teacher and really there's very little I can do as either to stop my child or any others hearing things outside the realms of what is acceptable within each family. It's impossible for me to have any idea about playground conversation or even stop conversions from happening until after the fact. Even then as a parent and a teacher I can't guarantee that any child will follow my guidance about what is appropriate to say. Really all I can do is direct the conversation in my home the way that best suits our family's needs or wants - so for now Santa is a keeper. Then in time when DS1 decides he no longer believes I'll ask him to keep the magic alive for his little brother until he decides in his own time that Santa doesn't exist as well.

I've read a little further about parents lying to kids.... I know I do... I told my boys that when the music plays on the ice-cream truck they've run out of ice-cream ... I'm sure we'll laugh about my fictional stories together when they grow up

I also tell my grade 1s that when I click my fingers if they press their heads it turns them invisible to adults. If they speak they become visible again... We cross paths with the principal and other teachers and I tell them I can't see my class because they are invisible and silent... They play along and the kids believe it and love it. It means they get all the way to the music room without a sound too. I think it's quite beautiful they believe

Yes, I've definitely lied in my life. Im not trying to pretend I havent. I just dont intentionally lie to my children. Its just not how I personally parent. It doesnt feel 'natural' to me. I dont know why youre so hung up on the fact that I choose not to lie to my kids. I think probably lots of parents dont. Thats ok. A lot of parents also do lie to their kids. That's equally ok too.
