That grand final day holiday is a joke. I literally thought it was a joke when I first heard it and was surprised when I found out it was real 😂. Why they didn't bring back show day instead of that is mind boggling.
Cup Day is only metro Melbourne though. I used to work in Geelong and they didn't take Cup Day but still took Geelong Cup Day as a holiday (the week before). I'd be in favour of ditching Cup Day. Silly reason for a public holiday.

See, context goes a long way. Did you read the post before mine that I was responding to? How about the part of my post where I talked about what I thought *would* be valid comparisons? Or how about my response to another poster that made the same point as you, in which I explained that I replied to a specific question that was asked?

My dad ( Vietnam vet) feels very differently, he endured war and loss so we had freedom , if we choose to change the flag and that's what the majority wants so be it - that's what he fought for , the right to choose , my grandfather was the same , as are most diggers I know , they just want their country united otherwise their sacrifice was for what?

While I don't exactly like our flag I'm a bit 'meh' about changing it. NZ is going through this process at the moment and it is costing a lot of money. I think there are better things to spend money on.

    I don't.

We're not free of other countries connotations - we're still a constitutional monarchy with our Monarch being Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

If Australia becomes a republic then look at changing the flag to "free" ourselves from Britain, but until then I think it remains an important part of the identity.

Default How do you really feel about Australia Day?

I've got the afternoon to myself while DH has the kids so I'm planning on going to this....

    SEMAPHORE

    ■ Celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and acknowledge the indigenous nations’ history at Survival Day on the Semaphore foreshore. The event, organised by the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, will feature performances from Adelaide indigenous musicians including Catherine Carter, Allan Sumner, Bec Gollan and Eddie Peters and Kurruru Youth Performing Arts members will be performing traditional dances from 12.30pm-7.30pm.

    What an awesome idea!
