I'm not intentionally pushing the point hard - perhaps as it's late and my views are in the minority it seems like they are being pushed?
Where did I take the moral high ground? You yourself said that the day is disrespectful to indigenous Australians and the day is "off". My language was far less specific than that and my reasons for not getting into it was only partly explained by its history, mostly because of personal reasons.

@HollyGolightly81 for sure, and you're right, I was just responding to the question asked by PP.

But absolutely, yes, it's not a relevant comparison to be making.

Not aiming this post at you, but more I think because many Australians refer to their indigenous people as 'black' that they often think it is the same thing as a black American when it is actually different. Obviously both dealing with tragic histories in American culture but dealing with different issues.
I think this thread is about Australia Day. Not sure what America has to do with it.

Most people have not said that they are against having a day to celebrate Australia, how fortunate we are etc

Most people have simply objected to the date being Jan 26th and the symbolism of that.

Most people have recognised how incredibly offensive that is

That isnt to say that they are so morally outraged with celebrating our great country that they put their fingers in their ears and have a little personal temper tantrum and refuse the public holiday.

Just that change is driven by people ... and many agree that this is something that needs to be changed

Agree. Just think people taking the free day off is not the best way to drive change.

Surely you should be quoting the first poster in this thread to mention America then?

😏...A few people have referenced America, obviously being an American with strong Australian ties I am going to share my opinion or comment on comparisons being made.

I'm not sure why anyone's talking about anywhere else. We are talking about Australia Day.
