I also like to make a class book or two early on. Sometimes I do values etc with kids pics etc. but often just them at play with names for getting to know you etc.
Check out the books "the kissing hand" and "how full is your bucket". The second is probably more appropriate for the age and the demographic it sound like I do a lot revolving around these books in the first few weeks.
I play the usual games but in particular I like 2 truths and a lie to discuss the difference between fibbing/game etc and a hurtful lie.
I get then tonwrite me or my dog a letter to get to know them and asses writing skills less formally. I make fun templates for it
