Person 1 picks any present they like and unwraps it straight away.
Person 2 then chooses a present and unwraps it. If they want to, they can either keep their present or swap with person 1 and person 1 MUST swap.
Person 3 then chooses and unwraps. They can swap with either person 1 or person 2.
It goes on and on like this until everyone has unwrapped their present. At this point it goes back to person 1 and they get to swap their gift with anyone they like.

It's actually loads of fun, and hilarious watching people go nuts over certain things. Last time we did it, we took a ride garden gnome. It was the most swapped gift because everyone wanted it. Sometimes it makes it more fun than just boring secret Santas.

That sounds awful. And completely changes the meaning of the word 'gift'.

A novelty USB stick. Kmart has some cute ones.

    iTunes gift voucher.

Wine or chocolate are ok if you can't find anything more interesting. Everyone tends to buy that though so it gets a bit boring.

Yeah but the poor person who gets something they like and someone else takes it away based on the fact that their go was later...

I would hate to be part of that.

That's what makes it fun, by the end everyone is roaring with laugher. Maybe I'm just mean...!
It wouldn't really work in an office that wasn't very 'jokey'.

I think it can be something that would work with some people and not others. I don't mind it tbh but I know it would not suit work. Might work with the IL's though...

It is a game. The limit is $20 so it's not like there's anything amazing or expensive that someone will take off you. Usual gifts are things like DVDs, corny Christmas CDs, one year there was a flower shaped dish brush, the garden gnome, candles etc. Seriously if you get that emotional over a $20 gift then the game isn't the issue...

We do this at work - it is lots of fun! But no-one takes it too seriously, and thats the key really... The most "swapped" gift last Xmas was a $20 note (it was originally wrapped in a bigger box so it wasnt obviously a money gift.)

my old work did this. it had some weird twist whereby you'd draw a number and pick your prize in numerical order. the catch was, anyone who had a lower number than you (ie already had their prize) could opt to swap their gift for yours if they liked what you got. was ok, got a bit tedious towards the end as it was a large group.

but the kinds of gifts involved were anything and everything.

I'll list a few here that I still remember:

    a cocktail shaker
    iTunes gift card
one of those BBQ fish grilling things (it's metal and fish shaped lol)
    a little Japanese dining set

    etc etc

any kind of homewares were a hit. my cocktail shaker and iTunes gift card were a hit and swapped multiple times.

the unpopular stuff was just stuff nobody would want or use.

I'd just go with something useful. who really cares in the end, it's just a token gesture and the idea is it's supposed to be fun/a laugh with colleagues.
