    We might have to - we also just discussed telling the agent we want to extend and would like to discuss the plans with the owner just to get an 'in' - if the sale doesn't go ahead we were going to extend anyway

    Why don't you just write a letter saying words to the effect of

    "we have been approached by a developer and wish to discuss this directly with the property owners. Please have them contact me on 99999999"

    Surely they would be happy to talk to you about that? I know I'd be straight on the phone to you if my property manager passed on a letter or email like that.
