Whilst we are getting fatter in Australia, there has always been a problem.

People just aren't aware of what is healthy anymore. Like others said labels / advertising are so misleading.

I think we have TOO much choice. We need to go back to basics and eat simple real food. And any treats are home made so u know exactly how much sugar etc are in them.

Im sure many Aussie kids eat more than their recommended daily sugar intake just at breakfast alone with all the fancy sugar ladden cereal on the market. My cousin for example thought she was starting her kids day right by giving them Milo cereal 😕

We have 2 cereals in this house. Kids weetbix and oats.

This is a subject I'm very passionate about.

Is absolutely shameful and disgusting that they can get away with rating a juice popper or muesli bar as 4.5 stars on the 'health star rating' scale when both are full of sugar, but plain full fat yoghurt gets one star!!

This is why people are obese. They honestly believe that they are making good choices, based on misleading labelling and advertising. A lot of people just don't know, and some just don't care.

I strongly feel that nutrition needs be taught in schools.
    Bravo! Well said

Default Australia - a mismatch between reputation and reality

The comment about fit/healthy was a bit of an aside- what I mean by that is just as you can have a 'healthy' BMI and still be unhealthy, you can also be fit and unhealthy. Take my brother, who can lap me twice on a 3km circuit and could probably bench press 5 of us at a time, goes to the gym 6 days a week and rides his bike everywhere. He lives off junk food and beer.
I know what you mean now.

My sister is so skinny. Size 6/8 but eats cakes for breakfast and has 6 sugars in her coffee. Smokes a pack a day. Doesn't exercise. I don't drink alcohol, coffee, don't smoke, I exercise. I eat well 6/7 days. But guess who people would assume would be healthy on appearance alone when we walk down the street together.

Being healthy is a multitude of things. I agree.

I always go back to this example, but my bestie and I are exactly the same height (167cm). I weigh around 60-65kg, she weighs 50-55kgs. Both of us are at the perfect size for our body types- no one would call her underweight or me overweight but there is a 10kg difference- it's just that we have such different body types.
