Is it just me, but doesn't vodka have a smell? Kinda like metho? In saying that though I don't think it's the mums fault. An awful situation, but it's not like It was done intentionally.

yeah that was my first thought. vodka smell makes me dry retch, it's awful. unless she just wasn't paying attention and was making it up quickly and didn't even think it mightn't be water (and why would you!?)

    sounds like an awful bungle.

I started saying the same thing to DH but halfway through my sentence realised I had no idea how old the child was. And that she could be so sleep deprived it was just an automatic 'fill up the bottle and feed the child' without knowing. So so sad.

I can see how this could happen, although a bit strange.

Once when we were visiting friends for a BBQ, another friend of ours was really thirsty, for some reason she picked up a water bottle which was half full on the kitchen counter and drank it, turned out it was straight vodka.

I have no idea why anyone would pick up a strange water bottle and drink from it in someone else's house, but she did. She wasn't drunk either. But anyway, moral of the story is she didn't realise it was vodka until she had downed a few sips.

So i guess if the mother was making up a baby bottle, she may not have smelt it.

Also anything in the home could have masked the smell, say for instance she had just used cleaner on the kitchen counters, it leaves a smell and she could have not smelt the vodka because of that?

some people claim vodka has no smell/taste and others (like me) think it does. as you say, maybe she was desensitized to the smell of her partner was a booze hound or like you say, had just been using cleaning products etc.
