It's really not fair for women to know if they'll be getting it this year, a few senators have called for it to be phased in if it does get in, so women can plan ahead.
As of right now, it's bit been passed, I'm not even sure if it's had a first reading since it's been amended to the whole 18 weeks thing (which means a whole 4 weeks of PPL from the govt. for most people who will be affected, whoopety doo). It has be to be passed by both houses by June and there is a bit of opposition to it so it's not guaranteed for it to get through.
Any news? I haven't kept up to date with any current events
It's still sitting with the originating house (reps), nothing has been done with it since 25th June 2015 when it was introduced.
But it exists though, right?
They announced an updated bill that would be different than the original (they would top up parents with paid leave on top of what they get from their employer to 18 weeks) but it hasn't been submitted to parliament.
They may try and sneak it through the Backdoor but I think unlikely given the media stir it has caused. Will all depend when they call the election as well, probably less likely to go through if they go to caretaker.
If would be pretty bad of them to get it through and start it July 1 this year (though it's still in the real) so fingers crossed if they do bring it in, it won't be till the following financial year now.
With 3 1/2 months until the end of financial year ( and if you got pregnant now be due December) it would be a bad political move to bring it in July 1.
I wish I knew when this was coming in, I'm due in August...
Pregnant for the first-time?
Not sure where to start? We can help!
