    What flavor is your sponge?
Lately my kids are loving white choc ganache, I love a cream cheese filling.
I like decorating with buttercream or ganache, no cracking or drying out.
Just remember to do a crumb coat, makes life so much easier!

It's not a sponge, it's a dense vanilla cake, so it can hold up to a bit of maneuvering
@CMF it's a very large and not delicate butterfly. It's from a newer WW kids cakes book (not the classic we all had as kids) and I'm pretty certain it won't be fragile

The only kids will be mine and possibly my 11 month old nephew.. No wait.. 10 months. 11 months at the end of August. It's only a very small family gathering as most have other things on.

In that case I'd definitely cut then fill, you wouldn't really do a light fluffy filling in a dense cake, however as it's just 2 layers of cake it would probably be fine, if your wanting to play it safe go with a buttercream or ganache.

    Ooh thanks for asking

I went with a buttercream filling, but I feel with also having buttercream on the outside of the cake it was super sweet!

Keep in mind I am NO cake decorator- my hands shake at the best of times and I don't have a lot of patience for detail, but here it is

It looks great! My cake making and decorating skills go as far as following the instructions on the back of a packet! If I'm feeling really fancy I'll throw some sprinkles on top! Ds has requested a 'rainbow spiderman' cake this year though so I may need to step it up.....a lot!
