I had an epi for my first, pethidine for my second and just gas for my third.

I found that I recovered more quickly without having the epidural.

I used the TENS too, it was excellent. It was far better pain relief than the morphine that I also had.

What effect does the TENS machine have? Having had no pain relief for my first I can't imagine some little electrical current even touching that level of pain!

The little electric pulses distract your brain into focusing on a different sensation rather than the labor pain. I forgot to pack mine😔.

Mine also has a little button I had to press on the onset of a contraction so I also focused on pressing button as it provided pain relief
