Default Cairns or Port Douglas resort recommendations

We've booked our flights for our honeymoon in early October and have booked a resort - Ramada.
But now I'm second guessing. I'm second guessing the reviews, the price ($280 per night incl breakfast and cot for DS). I think we could do better.

    Can anyone offer any recommendations?

What I'd like is something resort like - not just a motel. Preferably near / on / opposite the beach.

    4 star and above

We'll have a car so I don't mind if the resort isn't in town - whichever town that might be

I'm happy with any destination that is easily accessible from Cairns airport so Port Douglas, Trinity Beach, Kewarra, Cairns - all fine!

Price similar to what we're paying now. I don't have the cash for Sea Temple sadly!

Yup - we really like driving.

We plan to do rainforest, beach, relaxation, reef - typical things

We stayed at this resort and booked through Stayz and got a nice king room for $400 for 7 nights for the 2 of us!! These large resorts (including sea temple I believe) have a number of rooms within the complex owned privately not by the resort management so you can get a room a lot cheaper that way if you don't mind. The room we had was identical to the others, only difference was we booked and paid through a real estate agency and we couldn't book food from the restaurant to our room so had to pay each night that we ate at the hotel. The hotel itself was nice enough, it's about 5 minute walk to the beach. The resort pool while lovely was freezing cold as it's in the shade! I wouldn't be paying $280 a night for this hotel.
Having stayed at port Douglas and cairns I would probably go cairns/beaches as if you're out and about doing things I find cairns a bit easier as a base for this. Also the lagoon pool is great for little ones! All the best with planning your holiday

I wasn't a fan of sea temple. Great pool, and I loved the swim up rooms (ha that was pre kids). But the finishing was dodgy as and the breakfast was horrible and mouldy. That was about ten years ago though, maybe it's changed.
