You could turn all the lights off and wait until he's asleep then put your headphones in and watch a movie on laptop or something

    I'd share a bathroom. I'd just pack my flip-flops!

This wouldn't worry me. DP goes to hospital and shares a bathroom. We go camping and share bathrooms. We go to public toilets.

I wouldn't waste extra money for a private bathroom IMO. I would spend that on having some extra cash to take DS out to the movies/ ice cream/ shopping/ bowling... Or just save the money because I needed it.

Which city do you need a place in OP?

I'd share a bathroom. I've done it many times while travelling and haven't had a problem.

I'd share a bathroom. Just think of it like camping, with a better bedroom. :-)

Do follow PP suggestion about thongs for the shower though.

knowing my luck I'd get some creepy old weirdo on the other side and freak out about him creeping into my room in the night. I'm overly paranoid though. tbh if money is an issue i'd prob share but I'd email the hotel and say I'm a single mum with my baby son and would feel more secure if I was sharing the bathroom with another female guest. hopefully they stick you next to some cuddly granny type.

air bnb is also worth investigating. you may be able to rent a little apartment to yourself for the same cost as the hotel and you'll have your own bathroom plus kitchen facilities (which saves money on eating out/ordering in)

I would share and just take thongs to wear in the shower, you wont really be using the bathroom that much.
Depending how long you were away for you could also look at Aussie House Sitters I think its called where you stay at someones house while they are away

I'd share a bathroom if it meant I could afford it. As a PP said, take thongs for the shower.

We shared bathrooms at sleep school, when camping etc.
