I would maybe avoid family and people close to us, only to avoid confusion, but we didn't like any of their names anyway.

I think some people are more precious about this than others.
I had a friend of a friend ask me if she could use dd's name or if it would upset me, I actually thought it was more flattering then upsetting. (We may run into each other once a year)

No names are off limits. If I loved a name I'd use it.

Some of the people on your last might not even be in your life very long but your child has the name forever. Can I ask why you have such a large exclusion list?

I wouldn't think names are off limits if you really like them. You'll have your baby forever whereas colleagues certainly come and go.

Plus, sometimes people are actually flattered by the connection... I remember growing up there were lots of pairs of kids in school with the same name - it was always a bit cute "oh there's the two Sally's, peas in a pod" etc

Answered previously we thought it was the norm.

My best friend and I have a child with the same name. They even went to childcare in the same room. So friends and even family are not off limits to me.

However off limit names for me are names that bring up bad ideology in this country eg Adolf, Stalin, Pol, Amin and Tony. :P

I wouldn't have used a name from close friends and family or their children's names. I also excluded names starting with certain letters and looked up known people or characters by the name(someone had pointed out my dd1 and niece were both TV witches so wanted to avoid another witch lol). I did have a minor freak out with dd1 when an ex colleague of my husbands used our girls name only 10 weeks before us but we used it anyway as it had been picked for years, just at 30 weeks pregnant seemed like a horrible thing to happen lol.

I've heard lots of teachers say they have trouble naming their child a name they associate with certain students they've taught.

It just depends if you can separate the attachment to the name.

Not off limits but if I know anyone in our circle of friends with a child with a name I like I wouldn't want the name as I prefer names that aren't so common ( it still normal / traditional) and also siblings kids. I'm pretty sure grandparents would find it confusing if they had 2 grandchildren called Charlotte for example.

So I agree, no names are off limits, just use common sense.

I wouldn't use immediate family names, or close friends kids names etc.

I don't really consider any name "off limits" as such, I just can't bring myself to use a name of someone I know! Weather it be a child or an adult. To me it just feels like it's their name. I have found it really hard naming my children. THe funny thing is, the names I've given my kids aren't even uncommon, but they just happen to be names that I don't personally know anyone with those names.
