Default CT scan tomorrow. what is the dye like?

I am having a CT scan on my urinary tract tomorrow. It is my 1st CT scan and I was told I have to have an oral dye preparation. So I am guessing I have to drink it? I have the weakest stomach especially when empty as it will be tomorrow. Is it really horrible?

I've had an abdominal CT scan (for intestines) and had to drink a liquid before hand. It didn't taste like anything much - mainly water but I had to drink a lot (I think 1 or 1.5 litres) over a short space of time. If you google a lot of sites talk about barium which is like a milkshake, however that isn't what I was given. It was basically just water with a bit of an odd tastes (but not that unpleasant).

I'm not sure if this would be the same stuff but I think it would be close.

Don't worry, it's not that bad

This was me too - freaked me right out as they never bothered to warn me of that one! The other thing with the IV one is sometimes you can feel like a hot burning up the back of your throat - it's really unpleasant but nothing to worry about (easier said than done I know - it still freaks me out and I have CT with IV dye two or three times a year).

    Good luck.

It doesn't taste to bad. From my experience drinking it myself and giving to patients it's normally about 3 glasses over a period of 30 minutes or occasionally as pp mentioned it can be a fairly large amount. Just depends on the brand they use.
