Default When to see a doctor again?

So I've had a cold for the last few weeks, it's eased up and now just have that horrible chesty cough left.

DS has started looking sick, didn't think much of it. He had a slight runny nose and no temp. Then a week go he started to get a dry cough, kept fluids up and it's now developed into a chesty cough as well. We went to see a doctor (not our normal one) on Thursday and he said if the cough got worse to come back, he said his chest sounded ok and everything looked fine (his throat was red, that was the only thing) I walked out feeling like a mother who rushed her child to the doctor for anything and must of looked like a fruit loop.
Yesterday his cough has become disgusting. You can hear the 'rattling' which is probably the wrong word. Mainly after he has a bit of a coughing fit. During dinner he had a coughing fit (which sounded like me a week or so ago) where I coughed so hard it sounded like I was choking. You can hear him try to clear his throat when it's full of crap (if u know what I mean)

So other than me sounding like a lunatic and being overly cautious. When would u take your child back to see a doctor?

What tips can anyone give me to help him out?

We've tried (and still are doing) steaming up the bathroom and sitting in there, we have high ceilings so it seems like such a waste of water.
    Baby Vicks
Propping up the end of cot slightly
    Antihistamine

Anything to help out would be great. He's fussy but still quite happy. Has his moments, after playing for a bit he gets upset and has to sit down for a cuddle.

And yep if I'm being ridiculous please someone tell me to pull my head in lol

Default When to see a doctor again?

Is he having difficulty breathing? Is there a fever?

If yes to the above then I would see the doctor again. If not then I wouldn't. It's probably a post viral cough where the body is getting rid of all that phlegm. If he seems mostly happy, feeding ok, not dehydrated and no fever/difficulty breathing then I definitely wouldn't worry.
Btw make the cot a sharp incline. Or use phone books under the mattress to prop it up further.

There doesn't seem to be difficulty breathing, when he coughs it seems like he runs out of breath but only if he's coughed for a little while but I'd answer no to that. And no there isn't a fever. Been keeping a close eye on him for that and he seems fine.
Thank you 😊 I don't want to hassle the doctor for nothing.

You didn't look like a fruit loop. You got checked because you were worried. Totally normal and the right thing to do.

Yes I would take him back.

DH, DD and DS have all just had a virus that progressed just like that. It also initially presented as croup in DS. DH and DS both developed secondary chest infections and DD developed a secondary ear infection which didn't clear up after the first round of antibiotics. None of them developed a fever with the secondary (bacterial) infections.

Since the cough is getting worse and not better, I would definitely get the doc to listen to his chest again.

Thank you. That makes me feel better.
Our normal doctor isn't in for a few days so I'll probably give him a few days and see if he gets worse.
I feel so bad for him because he's caught it from and I felt dreadful with it but at least understood. He doesn't.

Oh the poor things! I hope they are all on the mend.

Thank you, like I said our normal doctor isn't in (we live in a small country town) so I'm hoping it's just the end of it like a pp said but if it doesn't improve I'll take him to see the doctor again.

I'm just hoping I'm not over reacting.
