Hubby is on camp Berenstein. Thought I was deliberately trying to irritate him when I told him they are called Berenstain.

I think it's very easy for a lot of people to have confused the Berenstein/Berenstain thing. Our minds mostly read by recognizing the shape of the word. So for a word like Berenstain, it would be easy to mistake it for the much more common "stein"...Who has ever heard of a name ending with "stain" instead of "stein"??

I did totally think I remembered Muhammad Ali dying though!

Exactly right, there is no "stain"
No I agree that that's the logical explanation. But it's so damn mind-blowing that so many people could make the exact same specific mistake. And names ending with "Stein" weren't even that common in Australia, it's very German? Jewish? (someone correct me here)

    I can't believe you're on Team Stain @harvs!

The beer cup with a handle is called a 'stein' and many Germanic names finish with this (eg. Weinstein).

We naturally sort new information and match it up with existing information/classifications, this would be an example of this. Another example would be a woman I used to work with. She had a friend called (names altered for privacy) 'Marley' pronounced like Bob Marley. My name 'Maylee' (pron may-lee) is pronounced phonetically by everyone despite being uncommon, but this person 'sorted' my name as 'near enough' to her existing knowledge (her friend's name) and, despite hearing the correct pronunciation hundreds of times, could never adjust to saying it the right way and always called me Mar-lee.

I am the same, I don't get the fascination with MASH at all.

*whispers* I really, really don't like MASH.

I also have this thing where there are certain events in my life that I honestly don't know if they have happened or if I dreamed it. I always thought there must be something really wrong with me. I mean, there probably still is, but now I will call it the Mandela Effect 👍

I read this book to my son all the time, I would have put money on it being 'stein'... But here it is!
