The waiting list for public hospitals for some conditions is years and years. Elective conditions are a lot more critical than you might think and includes things like hip and knee surgery, some heart conditions, fertility issues, etc etc etc.

While it is a lot of money to spend, every time I have needed it I have thanked my lucky stars that I can afford to keep paying it.
( for record I went private in private for my *****oscopy ) but I fall into category of none emergency. Strong family history of bowel cancer, was suggested by my fathers GP I was checked as I neared 30. No other symptoms, apart from history. I elected to have a *****oscopy as that would know condition for sure.
Turns out I had a pre cancerous polyp. Had I waited for public it may have turned or more grown. I would have been at the bottom of the waitlist due to lack of anything else
