    I made ds' 1st bday cake myself. I made a vanilla buttercake with buttercream and decorated it with smarties.

    There is always a little more pleasure in making a cake from scratch. I was just going to mention that if your local woolies have a bakery, they may do customer orders. All decorated and ready to go mud cake is $65. For a half slab that feeds 50. I'm not sure what the cost of buying all the ingredients would be.

    If you're worried about the writing, you could always get the iced letters?

    You can pipe the letters onto a sheet of baking paper and freeze it. That way you get to pick the best letters to transfer onto the cake.
