    Default HCG Levels no increasing/doubling

    Hi all,

    I am after some advice/success stories/reality....

I think I am about 6 weeks pregnant- had a scan Tuesday 14th April, and was measuring 5mm, so we think 5 weeks. I had a sac but no yolk. Nothing to worry about as it was early. So booked another scan for 2 weeks later which is on the 28th April. In the meantime, I had some blood work done to see if my levels were looking good.
I had my first blood test Thursday afternoon (16th April) and my second this morning (Monday 20th April). The doc rang me today to say that my levels weren't looking good. They had only risen by 20- which with my research is not good at all !!!! She told me to keep my scan next week as that will tell me more, but in the meantime gave me instructions on what to do if I start to bleed or have cramps.

So I am now sitting here trying to hold out hope but also very concerned as my blood work was pretty bad- so trying to prep for what is to come.

This is my DH's and I first pregnancy after 2 years of TTC and using clomid.

Any assistance would be great ! I understand that it isn't looking good!

I'm not sure what to say. I have PCOS, took 3 years to have our first and have lost 4 babies through miscarriage due to immune issues.

It would be nice for a miracle to occur, but as you say the numbers aren't great. The scan will let you know for sure what is going on so that you can make a decision if a mc needs to be helped along.

Will be thinking of you. Many specialists won't do tests after 1 miscarriage, but you could ask and see what they say to eliminate any obvious issues.

I couldn't read and not stop in and offer hugs.
No you're right it doesn't sound good however take your doctors advice and see what happens at the scan.
Wishing for only good things for you x

    Default HCG Levels no increasing/doubling

Be prepared for the worst but hope for the best. That was my mantra when going through the same thing (hcg rising not doubling)

Unfortunately I ended up having a miscarriage however I read many stories online similar to mine and some did end with take home babies. It seems HCG can do some weird things. This was my third pregnancy and unfortunately knew the weak numbers weren't typical for me however with your first you may fid sometimes it goes up slowly the really quick to catch up,

Cyber hugs and fingers crosses for you

I am very sorry to hear that your levels aren't doubling. I've had 4 miscarriages in the past and my only advice is to get them to test your progesterone levels now with your quantitive hcg levels to see if that may be a contributing factor.

I sincerely hope that your little one does start to do as it should and while you should try and be optimistic, experience tells me that it is also best to prepare for the worst.

If this pregnancy continues you will be over the moon. If it ends in miscarriage - that's when you'll need to have a coping mechanism in place to get through it.

Knowledge is power. Do your research. Don't be afraid to push/challenge your doctor.

    good luck xo

    Thank you everyone!

In talking to the DH we are preparing that at our US next week there will be the sac but no yolk and go from there. If we're prepared now then hopefully it won't hurt as much.

As we can't afford to go private with a pregnancy, we just saw a gp and had US at the hospital. But had been seeing a gyne and happen to have an appointment next week so I'm thinking I'll keep that app (we were going to talk about my next options as clomid wasn't working) and get a second opinion from her !

With my reading it appears that if it isn't progressing and I don't Ms on my own I may need to take some drugs etc. so be good to have a second opinion from someone I have been seeing for 2-3 years 😊

    Hi everyone,
I'm only new to the forum and i wanted to ask a few questions and if anyone else has had the similar or same experience.
I had what I thought was my period on 17th sept. Bleeding was on and off for the week then stopped on the 25th Sept. However on the 28th sept I started the have light spotting for a couple of days and mild pelvic pain. Went to Dr did pregnancy test to find out I was pregnant. I was very excited but due to symptoms had a blood test and scan that day. Was very early for them to see anything on scans. Since then I've had about 4 scans and 5 blood tests. HCG levels have been rising slow, results below:
    30th Sep hcg 1100
    3rd Oct hcg 1600
    6th Oct hcg 2000
    12th Oct hcg 3600
    16th Oct hcg 4000
    19th Oct hcg 7000.
Drs are all confused and haven't been able to give me a straight answer. Initially they thought I could have ectopic pregnancy due to slow rising levels but scans have ruled that out. Then they thought maybe unviable pregnancy and possible miscarriage. however my last scan on Thursday 15th Oct showed a sac in the uterus but looked empty. But levels have almost double between the Friday and Monday blood tests. I have another scan on Friday. Has anyone every experienced anything like this before? I'm frustrated, confused at the same time quite emotional.

I went through a similar thing last year, although wasn't so fortunate to have so many blood tests and scans so close together (hence a lot more waiting inbetween not knowing what was going on). I can't tell you what's happening in your case (and clearly your health providers are yet to be clear on this either). It does sound similar to mine, I had 2 scans that showed nothing (they told me come back in 2 weeks as prob too early, but I started spotting so insisted on more scans/tests). Was also petrified of ectopic when my hcg rose to 8000 and they still hasn't seen anything. From memory it wasn't doubling exactly but still rising significantly so my GP thought it sounded fine.

The next scan revealed an empty sac but they STILL told me to come back in 2 weeks... Just in case ?! I think I knew at that point it was over but held hope because they said it was still perfectly possible everything was fine..,

My experience ended in mc and hopefully yours won't be the same. I guess I just wanted you to know that results are not always definitive (as frustrating as that is, I absolutely know). Time is the only thing (or on my case, heavy bleeding & cramping a week after the last scan) that will give you a definite answer. You'll either see an embryo with a HB next scan or not. But the wait is horrible,

What did they suggest doing? Coming back in a week or so? I was told there was no point in doing further HCG tests once they see something on the scan as the HCG becomes less accurate over time and they will be able to define growth (or lack thereof) via the next scan.

Thanks for your post and sorry to hear you mc. I've been reading so many different forums and everyone is so different. At this stage I've got another scan on Friday which will hopefully tell me more. Then once dr has received results they do a phone appt and then decide on plan of attack from there.

Wishing you all the best and so sorry you're having such a stressful time. Waiting and not knowing is so so hard. Be kind to yourself and distract yourself as much as possible in the meantime x
