I find it extremely hypocritical of Indonesia to seek clemency for their nationals on death row in other countries for drug trafficking, yet deny clemency for foreigners in the same position for similar crimes?

I am strongly anti death penalty. No matter what the crime. For the reasons already mentioned, but there's another factor as well: someone has to actually be the executor. If someone is sentenced to death then there is a person (or several) who will be required to kill them. And I believe that is harmful. I think that everyone involved in the process of putting a person to death is harmed by their part in it.

If someone commits a crime then their punishment should not inflict damage upon innocent people as much as is possible. The death penalty sprays trauma indiscriminately - so many people suffer because of it. The people who work in the justice system and sentenced them, the people in the firing squad, the families of the people on death row, and even people who read about it in the news and are distressed.... It is damaging to society in general.

I remember reading a while back about an interview with someone who executes people for their job. They spoke of how they felt it damaged their soul, about how difficult it was, but how they felt they were doing a good deed by sparing someone else from having to take that job and damage themselves. It really illustrated to me how wrong it is to have rules such as the death penalty that require people to harm themselves to enforce them. Killing in cold blood is not something to ever be encouraged.

Interesting you say that, so it's do the crime and do the time, unless they are Indonesian of course, then they can get a lesser sentence .

Some amazing people in this world have been drug addicts, people who have achieved far more than you or I could ever dream.

Do the crime, do the time and except the punishment whatever that may be. Our government shouldn't intervene in other countries laws. I do think that they took too long in giving these 2 the death penalty though, it shouldn't drag out so long when it's decided.

Is there really any need for this? Its a debate thread and others are entitled to their opinion-even if its not in line with the majority. Lets not make it personal...

Fair enough. It wasn't intended to be personal but it just struck me as a funny comment. I will edit...

ETA Although I will explain further and say the reason that comment stuck out to me was because it seems like a very weak reason to say that two human beings deserve to die.

I didnt read her post as that was the reason they deserve to die-just that they knew the consequences.

S'all good just dont want to end up with another closed thread when it is an interesting topic. I am also looking forward to reading VPs thoughts on USA.

I thought it was funny - you should have left it! I am all for a good, robust debate - but surely we are allowed to have a laugh at the same time?
