It doesn't come across like that, what it does show though, is that people are capable of change, rehabilitation. It shows what people can do if they are given a chance. Of course some people won't change, but some do. And that right there is why I will always stand for mercy.

Default Debate thread for discussing the death penalty and the Bali 9

Especially when they have actually demonstrated rehabilitation and change, not just represent the possibility that it may happen :-)

Well the best part about this whole thread is the proof that VP does have a big old squishy bleeding heart under there somewhere :-p

Its true many people never change, some never want to, some don't see the point and others will say every night at 3am when they are crashing that "This is it, I'm not going to have any more, I dont need it, I'll go for a walk or brush my teeth instead" then a few hours later they are knocking on dealers doors, every hit their last.
I had my reasons to pack it in and decide to get out but i think maybe had I been born into a different country or met international syndicate level people (I associated with a fair few manufacturers and bikies so it was possible I guess) I could have been on the firing squad, shot dead years ago. Obviously that is a stretch and probably sounds conceited but I changed and noone ever thought I would. I don't think being clean and being a changed person are the same thing though. With any drug you have to work through the reasons you began in the first place and the problems you have caused your self and others. Some of the things I put myself through still haunt me now but you can't just say "oh I'm clean so I'm a changed person!" You need to work through the ****. Before using and especially during using so that you dont just run back to it when **** gets hard or your "friends" are passing it around (which I assume would happen alot in Bali prisons, I dont honestly know though). I dont know if any of the Bali 9 have changed or will change but they shouldnt be shot because we have doubts in them.

I was actually worried when I sat down to read this thread because I (most of the time anyway) always agree with VicPark and thought that she would have a different opinion on this one. I apologize VP for making assumptions about you.

@RaraMum, that is AWESOME! (and just because for some reason when i read that back it sounds sarcastic, its not. I really think its awesome you got off the drug you were on)

On topic. I'm not really sure how I feel about the death penalty being applied to them. While i'm not morally outraged or anything, I don't agree with the death penalty being applied to drug dealers and smugglers. But at the same time, I just can't find sympathy for people who willingly and knowingly smuggled drugs in a country where the penalty is death. And this still applies to these two.

But, I will be up front in stating that I think in some circumstances, the death penalty should apply to certain people. I believe that some crimes, they strip you of your humanity and render you less than an animal. And since we put animals down who have harmed us, i apply it to those people.

So perhaps me believing the death penalty should apply for some crimes takes away some of my horror at this. Because the crimes i believe should be punishable by death are perfectly legal in other places. So i assume this is how Indonesia sees drug smuggling and using. Perfectly "okay" for want of a better word in other places, but it strips people of their humanity in their eyes. So they are no longer human, and their rights no longer exist.

For those who feel this is a rather cut and dry scenario for Chan and Sukumaran, I'm interested in if they feel the same way for Rodrigo Gularte? He's the Brazilian paranoid schizophrenic on death row in Indonesia.

Its completely different. This man was targeted to be a mule because of his mental illness which negates his capability for choice. Indonesia not recognizing his mental illness is much more of an abuse of human rights in his case IMO...and where were all the Australians fighting for his rights?

Chan and Sukumaran had the presense of mind to choose-and had done so 3 times prior to this event.

That is just horrifying. I'd say no one stands a chance if these are the things that the Indonesian authorities do. Just vile.
