Default Debate thread for discussing the death penalty and the Bali 9

*Mod Note* (This and the accompanying post has been moved from the 'I stand for Mercy thread, the original poster of this thread is Apple iphart as per post number #3).

I don't believe they have rehabilitated. Not in that prison anyway.

I come from a heroin background.

I want to write so much. But then it will outlay to much details and I'm not sure who knows me in real life here.

They have trafficked it into another country, I'm terribly sad for that. But I would rather be putitng money and effort for the children stuck in a detention centre FFS. Not these *** holes who have done wrong. It makes me furious. And yes I will say that. No they haven't rehabilitated. They taped the drugs onto there legs, knew they were going there for an amount of money. If they got out what would he do? If they served there sentence what would they do?

Because I know the people here trafficking drugs VIA drones to the jails to get a hit aren't rehabilitated. They don't want to be. They want that rush. They pay good lawyers to get out. Then they do it again.

I would love to know where the other Bali 7 are (out of the 9) sorry I don't follow the story that much.

People make mistakes, I've known heroin addicts in my life, one is dead from an OD after getting his life on track and then doing it one more time after 10 years benign being clean and two are clean - one is now a famous, awarded author and the other one of the nicest people you would ever meet in you life.

These two run drug groups to get other people off drugs in the jail, they have raised money for charity, they have both studied degrees and one teaches art classes and the other is a pastor. You have no idea that they aren't rehabilitated, that is your assumption based on your experience. And you can't do that, everyone is different.

People make mistakes and do crap things, but they deserve a second chance. Drugs are evil and they were both drug users at the time - people on drugs do insane things- I am sure that you know what I mean judging by your post.

Default Debate thread for discussing the death penalty and the Bali 9

Rather than it continuing in the "I stand for mercy" thread, maybe we could contain all debating of the topic here and leave that thread for its intended purpose.

I haven't looked into it I'll admit but I do find it interesting that Indonesian drug traffickers get their sentences reduced but these two are refused clemency. I wonder if the Indonesian government is trying to prove that they won't do again what they did for Schapelle Corby....

Theres a huge difference between Corby and these guys though. With Corby there was the element of doubt when it comes to whether she did it or not...these guys walked in with drugs strapped all over their bodies. Cant deny that!

Nobody is trying to deny it.

They are just saying that 20 years or more in that hole of a prison is sufficient.

That they still have a right to live what's left of their lives after they have spent the best part of it paying the price for their stupid actions.

My post was in response to the OP wondering if it had anything to do with Corby.

I agree with that. I meant more that they're trying to prove that they're tough and they won't be lenient like they were with her. It just seems odd that they're showing leniency to their own drug dealers but refusing it for these guys. It feels like a show of force.

Entirely a show of force by Indonesia. Indonesia's own biggest drug dealer and king pin of entire operation of ice recently got 18 years, for drugs that were distributed and used within their own country. It's important to state that Andrew and Myuran are often touted as the "ring leaders" this is not actually the case. They themselves, were both also low to mid level. Their main role in Bali was directing the couriers to where they needed to go. The ring leader/king pin (the guy who funded it all) is apparently still living in Australia, free.

They knew the possible outcome of getting caught when they did it, so I'm finding it hard to have any sympathy for them. I don't personally agree with the death penalty though.
