This was bound to happen. Too many Jenny McCarthys who have used their celebrity status to spread some very effed up ideas and now we have a country in crisis.

One has to wonder, though, why Disneyland wasn't closed when the source of the outbreak was discovered.

In addition, the author's worries do not end should her son forego symptoms. Measles lies dormant in the body and can rise up, years later and can still cause complications and can still kill.

However, to be fair, death by measles is rare and the article itself is way over the top and totally alarmist.

    Very powerful stuff.

I think there has been a shift in the last few years against the anti-vax position. When I first joined the hub nearly 8 years ago (!!!) there seemed to be a lot more non/anti-vaxers. I'd be interested to hear if other long-termers feel the same.

Very powerful piece. You can feel the anger and pain in it. I hope her children get the all clear. What an awful wait

It amazes me that people can walk around in our developed nations and spread diseases that would be eradicated if everybody who was able to just did one simple, in most cases, harmless thing. I know that some children have had catastrophic reactions and that is terrible. Many more die from vax preventable diseases.

Wow. Every antivaxxer (by choice) should read this. Sad thing is though it won't change. There will still be people out there who dont do it.

I really don't understand why someone would take the word of a playboy bunny over thousands of scientists?

The other thing that hit me when my bub was in NICU was that at no point did they query hubby and I about our immunisation status.... There are so many so sick babies in there and anyone who isn't vaccinated could still come in if they had a child in there. Where does the hospital tolerance of anti-vaxxers end?!

I love love love this article. So powerful.
As a mum of a medically fragile kiddo I get so angry at non vaxxers.
