We're talking about a 3yo child though. My 3yo does things without thinking, I don't think yelling at the child will solve anything. Maybe a stern word and let them know they hurt you. And throwing the toy away is just cruel. A child so young just doesn't think about the consequences of their actions in the moment.

I would have said "oi! You don't throw things at people it's not very nice!" Given the mum a dirty look and swam off.

    Not sure what you did.

What a crappy thing to happen to you. Hope your noggin is ok. I would of of got the mums attention, probably along the lines of "oi, your kid hit me in the head with his toy and now it's sunk to the bottom". (The toy, not my head obviously)
I would then just continue what I was doing.

Did you peg the toy at his mother's face?

Ha. This made me giggle... Totally inappropriate, extraordinarily entertaining.

That's fine. This is why I said my decision is based on my local pool. We have one 25m pool and it is effectively the kids pool. They might leave lane ropes up at the end of the day if there are more lessons early the next day...but ultimately it would be stupid of me to go and exercise in the kids pool when I could swim without kids in the designated swimming lanes in the 50m pool without any hassles....but that's the set up of my local pool. Obviously your set up is different.

I think most of the comments (mine included) were about trying to make the kids parents more aware of what their kids were doing in the pool, rather than yelling at or shaming the 3y/o?

Personally I'm always in the pool right next to my DD who is also 3. Kids are still top-heavy at that age, and can get into trouble quickly.
