    Default vacuum cleaners?

what do you look for in a good one?
my previous one died a few years ago (it was vax brand) and since then Ive been using cheapies but im not happy with them ever,
so what do you look for?

With two small children and an inside pet that sheds hair what would you go for middle of the range? I cant afford a 3-4 grand vacuum cleaner so am talking around the 400/500$ mark

I got mine specifically because it had a head for hardwood floors.

When I bought it looked at Dysons, but didn't really like them. I know a lot of people rave about them, but I find them too plasticky. They also give me electric shocks when I use them.
oh will look them up we have all hardwood and lino flooring so one for hard floors would be great

    Default vacuum cleaners?

We had an Electrolux and it was nothing but trouble. It was meant to be great for pet hair but it was back being repaired more times than it was in my house. We ended up buying a middle of the road Dyson and we absolutely love it! Suction is soooo good, it's quiet, can be used on multiple floors (we have solid wood and carpet) and light to maneuver. I think it cost us around $600. I know there are a couple of other whizz bang ones that are the creme de la creme but we are really happy with ours.

I was just coming in to ask about vacuum cleaners too. I'm looking for an upright, under $400.

Miele are a great choice! I used to work selling vac cleaners and was the most popular one for the price range you've posted!

Ask them if they do a trade in price (that way you get a good price and get rid of your old vac!)

Also push for a discount. Most will oblige. Stay away from pushy sales people. They are more than likely going to want to sell you a bigger vac, and you just don't need that if you've only got hard floors!

We have a Shark Navigator, I think it cost about $400 from David Jones. It's great - we have two cats and it picks up their fur from our carpet just fine. It's got various attachments and goes from carpet to hardwood effectively.

We have a Dyson DC41 animal upright. We love it and it picks up all the animal hair when out dog is lucky enough to come indoors. We also have 2 young sons and it is easy enough to put baby in the carrier and vacuum. We looked for a vacuum that picked up dust. Also to be used on hard floors and carpet. The filters can also be washed.
We paid about $800, so a bit out of your budget but do not regret the money we have spent at all.
