    Feeding kids is so hard sometimes.
    Oozzle what about vegetables at fruit break? Or is your school specific to fruit?

    My middle child is not a fruit lover but happily takes carrot sticks, celery, capsicum or cherry tomatoes (which are of course a fruit anyway) for fruit break instead and the school has no issue with this.

    They allow vegetables, anything fresh really.. He won't touch any veg though, besides potato I have tried sending vegie sticks but he gags on them, I just make sure I hide them very well in his dinner!!

    It looks pretty good to me! I did notice the lack of protein though for your DD2, but understand your food issues, we have them here as well *sigh*

    If she's not restricted to a particular brand of jam, do check the labels because some jams available in supermarkets are just the fruit and sugar to set, I know sugar isn't great, but if jam is all you have to worth with you might as well opt for brand that doesn't contain added extras if you can!

    For example, the IXL brand strawberry conserve I have here contains (in order on the ingredients list): sugar [this being listed first means there is more sugar than fruit, as far as I know, anyway!], strawberries (40%), gelling agent (fruit pectin), food acids (330, 331). And the amount of sugar per 100g is 64.4g

    Whereas the Anatoth Farm raspberry jam I have here contains: 50% raspberries, sugar. And the amount of sugar per 100g is 62.8g.

    We are lucky both kids LOVE fruit and most vege. They will eat that stuff before they eat anything else.
    Dd2 used to be very picky and would only eat clean pasta or rice (ie no sauce or cheese or anything, just plain pasta or rice). We slowly got her to eat more by telling her certain foods had 'magical powers'- like carrot gives you princess eyesight, broccoli gives you princess strength etc, mash potato with peas and corn is cowgirl food..... and they love being outside, its a struggle to get them inside at dinner time!

    - apricot and date bliss balls.

    will post some photo's after .... as well as the taste results when DD tries them

    Lil Miss would your DD2 eat a salad for lunch? I used to send my youngest to pre-school with a salad, because the only sandwich he really wanted at that point was a jam sandwich and I just refused to see it as my only option (no food aversions...just not happy he couldn't have an egg wrap at pre-school). He took a bit longer to eat it, but we discovered by chance that he found it much easier to eat with a skewer instead of fork so that's what he got. A basic salad would be - baby spinach leaves, tomato, cucumber, capsicum, carrot (sliced instead of sticks as they were easier to eat), cheese and a small handful of sultanas thrown in (because he loved them and he seemed to eat more of the salad this way). Quick enough for me to make, and gave him a good lunch that was pre-school friendly.

    Or what about some different vegie sticks with some hummus (easily made at home...tin of chickpeas drained and rinsed, a clove of garlic, tablespoon of tahini, and lemon juice from one lemon...chuck it all in a bowl and blend with a stick blender). She's getting protein from the chickpeas that way, plus the goodness of the vegies.

    bliss balls

    Nut-Free Bliss Balls.

    Makes about 40.

    Ingredients:
    1 cup dried dates
    1 cup dried apricots
    2 cups desiccated coconut
    1/3 cup coconut butter
    2 Tablespoons coconut oil

    1 cup desiccated coconut (extra) for rolling.


    • Put dried fruit in a microwave proof bowl, cover with hot water and microwave for 2 minutes. Drain well.
    • Warm coconut butter and coconut oil in the microwave to melt.
    • Put all ingredients in food processor and blitz until well combined.
    • Roll teaspoons of mixture into balls, then roll in desiccated coconut.
    • Eat straight away, or put in fridge or freezer to harden slightly.

    At least your getting vegies in to him the best way you can Fruit break was started because some kids weren't getting ANY fruit or veg in a day so it was a way to encourage the parents to ensure their child got at least one serve or fruit or veg in their diet.

    Just a thought though...would he eat cold mashed potato? You could substitute 1/4 of it for cauliflower and then slowly increase the cauliflower so it's half and half. Would he notice? If not cold, it might be another way you can hide vegies in his dinner. I used to do this with my kids when they refused to eat mashed sweet potato.

    Dd1 gets pretty much a sandwich or left overs and fruit/veg. I try to get protien into her at lunchtimes, but not always possible, she has recently gone off bread and bready thing (ie: sandwiches/muffins/scones/pinwheels - i am sure this will change over winter. This week she has had for lunch:

    A leftover chicken drumstick (i cooked roast on Sunday night) with cheese and cucumber, snacks have been capsicum, apple and strawberries cut up. Today she had left over fried rice for lunch with cheese and cucumber for a snack and more apple and strawberries.

    She is always hungry when she gets home no matter how much i put in her lunch box - protien/carb wise. I try to balance it out but she is a very spirited 7yo and has no problem telling you what she wont eat.... Can make it very hard.
