Default First Time Parents Study: Call for Participants

Are you planning to have children?

    Research participants needed in Adelaide

Researchers at Flinders University are currently undertaking a project focusing on the desires and motivations of heterosexual couples who are planning to have children.

We are looking for participants who fit the following criteria:

*Heterosexual couples (married or de facto) planning for their first child
    *Australian citizens living in Adelaide
*No history of major fertility concerns

    What does participation involve?

Participants will be involved in four interviews about their experiences of wanting and having a child. These will occur 1) at the point in which the couple are attempting to become pregnant, 2) during the pregnancy, 3) 6 months after the child is born, and 4) 18 months after the child is born. Members of each couple will be interviewed separately at each stage of the research. Interviews will take place at a location convenient to participants.

Being involved in the research will make for a great record of your pregnancy journey and becoming a parent. The researchers are happy to provide participants with copies of the interview transcriptions so that you can reflect on them in years to come.

The research has been approved by the Flinders University Social and Behavioural Research Ethics Committee (Project Number 6694).

Why is your research limited to heterosexual couples?

    Thanks for your question

Our concern was that if we had a really diverse sample (i.e. if we called for participation from anyone seeking to have a child by whatever method) then we might end up with only really small numbers of a wide range of population groups, and that would limit what we could say overall.

We thought that if we started off by focusing on the group who is in the statistical majority in terms of having children in Australia, then down the track we could branch out and explore other groups using a similar research method.

Also, much of our research in the past has focused on a range of groups (lesbian mums, gay dads, people who have had children through surrogacy, adoption, foster care), so we thought it would be useful to focus on a group we haven't actually researched before.

We have outlined lots of our thinking behind the project on the website:

    Thanks for your reply.

After I messaged, I remembered that I'd read some of your work before, in And Baby Makes More.

Best of luck with your recruitment and research
