    Default Amnio testing.

    Hi all,

I have just booked in for a amnio test in two weeks time. I'm really really scared. I don't know how to feel or what to think. Trying to be positive but all I want to do is cry.

Has anyone been through this that has any advice on how to keep calm?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Mummy1986,
I had one at about 20 weeks due to a crappy scan in 2012. Was referred to a specialist in Brisbane for further scanning. He gave his stats about performing the procedure and I was happy with what he said and how the amino went . It was a little uncomfortable but not really painful just weird really. I didn't look at the needle or the screen and held my husbands hand tightly and dug my nails in so far they nearly drew blood. After the procedure I had to take it easy for a few days . The hardest but was waiting for the results. Not sure what your amino is testing for but have you heard of the less invasive harmony test which is available now. Could that be an option for you .

Hi Stumpy, thank you for your reply. I am having the amnio as my baby is at high risk of having Down's syndrome after my 12 scan and blood tests. The doctor I saw suggested the amnio as he said it is more accurate. I was a bit overwhelmed so that's what I went with. I am petrified of the risks and the results. The doctor has ordered the fish test which he said would give me some answers in roughly 48 hours but then they will do full testing also which I will have to wait 2 weeks for those results.

All I want to do is cry and waiting do long for the procedure and the results is going to be hard.

Sweetie I remember crying non stop and sleepless nights and I only had to wait 2 days for my amino. In my case everything turned out fine. So all the extreme worry was for nothing. My good friend had the harmony test after her 12 week scan. It was a simple blood test in comparison and also quite accurate I am told. Maybe ask your doc about it. Look after yourself.- I know it is hard but do try to relax. I found a long bath while reading a trashy magazine helped get my mind off it. Also stay away from googling about this stuff. Not helpful. Many women have amnios with no problems and many get confirmation that there are actually no issues with the bub that they need to be prepared for. Once I had the results a massive weight if worry lifted off me because I knew for certain all was ok and I could move forward and enjoy my pregnancy. I wish the same for you.

I hope this pic is clear enough but there is also the Panorama blood test option. Best of luck! Xxx

I just did the harmony test or NIPT non invasive prenatal test, which tests the babies DNA through my blood. It's gets sent to America. It cost me $400. I'm waiting for my results. It's basically 99% accurate. I didn't want to do an amino as I was scared of the associated risks. My doctor agreed to this test then 18 week scan after that if things don't look good, we will do amino

Did the other test results not come back as you had hoped? I'm so sorry to hear.

It is quite scary the whole procedure scares me. I still can't talk about it without crying. I just don't know how to feel
