Default Surfers paradise OR melbourne for young kids???

When DH and I went to surfers paradise 3 months ago on a small getaway we absolutely loved it (we're in tas). During our holiday we mentioned often how much it would be a difficult task bringng the kids to surfers. They would'nt cope being on the plane for almost 3 hours, standing in lines at the theme parks (which I know they will LOVE) and just the general constant whingng and fighting they do, which can make my life hell at times.

Since being home, ive done nothing but dream of taking the kids there later this year (more so for the theme park) but many people suggest waiting till they are slightly older (they will be 3,4 & 6 at time of travel).
Instead people suggest taking them to melb first (shorter flight etc). As this will be a good indication of how well they will travel..

I need your opinions, suggestions stories etc...

I'd say go with it. If you can, go outside QLD school holidays. If you do, the lines at the theme parks will be shorter, accommodation will likely be cheaper and the beaches won't be as busy. You then also have the option of driving up to Australia Zoo if you want to (and have a hire car - it's about 2hrs north of surfers), plus there are plenty of other nice places to go to while you're there (Mt Tamborine, Lamington national park/O'Reilleys, Currumbin sanctuary, springbrook national park on the QLD/NSW border - the glow worm caves here are supposed to be pretty cool).

Thank you ladies for the advice. We decided to bite the bullet and have our family holiday to the gold coast.

My next question is, where is a good family apartment to stay at? I was looking at towers of chervon but want to stay under $200 per night..

We looked at this option but as we are staying for 8 days we would prefer an apartment due to bigger living space and laundry in apartment

We have stayed at Paradise Resort- it is low rise- total set up for kids- the kids club is amazing and meant we went out for lunch on our own one day. It is more expensive but they have specials from time to time. we will be going back there! Its not 5 star but more of a family place.

Join discover Queensland website they have awesome deals. I would try and go outside school holiday time if you can - we went to Dreamworld during term and did not wait in 1 line - my DD would get to stay on rides it was so quiet - I would hate to go when it's busy it would be awful.
