    Default Low Morphology

    Hi all,

Just got DH's SA results back and they read that he has low morphology… Progressive motility was 31 (ref range is >32) and normal morphology was 0 (ref range >4).
Can anyone shed some light on these results?

    I also have PCOS.

Our specialist was really quick to palm us off to Melbourne IVF which really upset me. He offered no explanation as to the results and why they could be the way they are. My husband was in a lot of shock (understandably), but it was like the obgyn didn't give a crap. he just referred us to ivf.

Hubby is 33 and i am 31. We are both very healthy, don't drink or smoke. hubby uses weed occasionally…do you think the weed has much to do with the results? I have booked in with us to see another obgyn for a second opinion. In the mean time I've asked hubby to cut back on the smoking to see if this will help...

Has anyone else had these results and been able to conceive naturally?

    Thanks so much!
    xoxo

    Hi -
I'll be honest and say these results are pretty 😞
The morphology actually refers to the shape of the 'head' of the sperm. A result of 0 implies all his sperm have deformed heads.
The progressive motility refers to how the sperm move. This result is just outside 'normal' and can be easily improved by lifestyle changes.

My DH also has low morphology. We have done all sorts of things to improve his results. Some have worked some have not.

The hard truth is the 'weed' will have a definite impact on his result.

If he is serious about TTC then the weed needs to not just 'cut back', it needs to stop, for a good 12 months to see an improvement. There are lots of research studies online that clearly show a link between even random use of weed and poor sperm/fertility.

We have been told by countless specialists along the way that any changes to lifestyle/diet take at least 3-6 months to improve sperm quality. As you have PCOS it is likely that your own fertility will impact the length of time you spend TTC (hence my suggestion of 12 months)

Other things that can affect it are certain prescription medications (anti-depressants), alcohol , stress, anything that will over heat the area (cycling, spas/saunas, tight or restrictive clothing)

Our best results for DH were after he was on the following everyday for 5 months:

    Aloe Vera juice (20ml)
    Zinc (40mgs)
    Pumpkin seeds (1 Tablespoon)
    Folic acid (5mgs)
    Gogi berries (1 Tablespoon)
    Selenium (100mcg)
    Spermax or elevit for men.

    We also found acupuncture helped.

Hi! I also have PCOS and my DH also had 0 per cent morphology. I also went through Melbourne IVF!

As pp said, morphology is the shape of the sperm. Our ob said the sperm Could not penetrate an egg to fertilise it and our only option was ICSI and we would have zero per cent chance of falling naturally.

We did two stimulated cycles and got our dd.

During one of those cycles both DH and I did acupuncture. I managed to fall pregnant naturally on that cycle but lost that pregnancy very early on. So DH had at least one normal sperm during that cycle.

I would recommend trying acupuncture in addition to anything your FS advises. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies ladies, i really appreciate it…
I agree with you Blinky the weed needs to go, regardless of how recreational it is or not… thank you also for the vitamins etc that your DH has been taking.
I do acupuncture for my pcos, i think it would be good for him to start too...

I guess I'm reluctant to do down the ivf path because i believe we are still young and in reasonably good health. its a bit distressing to realise you may have to go down that path

in regards to the 0 morphology, i was under the impression that thats only relevant to that ejaculation - so had he tested again on another day, it may have been a different result… correct me if I'm wrong?

Poor motility, which is what DH had (6% ) can be markedly improved in a short period. From those horrendous results to me pg was 3 months.

Morphology isn't so easy. Sperm have a 3 month turn around. So if you start now, it will take 3 months to see results. My advice is a complete lifestyle change. He has to stop smoking pot, give up caffeine and get him on menevit. It was our saviour. Don't go IVF yet if you don't want, but it sounds like he has to make some changes.

Numbers can slightly change from one ejaculation to another, but a zero result tells me there are big issues with his sperm.

Thanks for the reply delirium, i totally agree that there are certain lifestyle and diet factors that need to change - weed being the #1. I'm just hoping that this was the wakeup call that he needed in order to stop.

Thank you for the articles… they are a good read.

I guess i just have to keep my fingers crossed that changes will happen and everything will work out ok

Hey hun thanks for the msg...

We did a whole dietary change, acupuncture and herbs and went and got a second opinion. New OB gave home another test and his morph improved to 3% - I just gave birth to our first baby on Monday. She was conceived naturally.

I hope u are ok and are comfortable with the advice you have been given. Don't be afraid to get a second opinion.

    All the best!!
