From my grandmother : when your mother was a baby she was very gassy and spewy. I used to pour hot water down her throat to get all the air up.
Me: wow, parenting sure has changed over the years! (Which is code for, I'd never do that you crazy old woman! )

And I think it was the mchn that said it!

My mil (the widwife) pushed for me to feed my first boiled water from that day he was born to help with colic.

My MIL was firmly of the opinion that breastfeeding for any longer than 6 months would result in a spoiled delinquent child. I breastfed her grandchildren for 10 months, 3 years and 2 years respectively much to her horror!

some of these are even new to me. kids on the floor = feral kids.
I think most advice seems to go in generations. what my mum did and what she said, often matched todays thoughts. even my gran too, come to think of it. my generation had a 'mothercraft' course at highschool. which I actually failed, my daughters laugh at that. we were told to do things by the clock, and by stages. but I think a bit different to lizzie hall?? always make for interesting discussions. generations and cultures, so many differences. marie

My favourites from my mil are:
"Its mean to eat/drink something in front of a baby and not give them some." Ok lady, does that mean i should be giving my 5month old beer and coffee? Not likely.

"If its hard to find clothes you can feed in while pregnant, just stop breastfeeding her. She doesnt need it anyway." Yeah ok, ill just tell my boob obsessed 20month old that she doesnt get milkies cause it interferes with my clothing options. She will totally get that.

My mum has said this too! She was giving my ds a drink of masters iced coffee one day and I walked into the room and had a go at her, her response? "It is the low sugar version what is the problem?" I couldn't hold my tongue!

My MIL did something similar when DS was 10 months. She was holding him while I looked for a snack in my bag. When I looked up she was trying to get him to drink from her bottle of coke zero! Not to worry though, as she pointed out "it's not REAL coke"
