    Default Smart phone addiction. Help!

    This is a genuine cry for help. I know it may sound silly to some and for others it may be as easy as putting the phone down and walking away. But it's not for me.

    I gave up smoking, cold turkey, 12 years ago and haven't looked back yet here I am, addicted to a bloody phone!

    I'm just wondering if anyone else is it has been and how did you fight it? I don't want to give up my phone all together because it's my link to the outside world but I just want to spend less time on it.

    I've deleted the FB app and have got rid of Pinterest and Twitter. I still have the BH app and Instagram though and find myself constantly checking both. Other than banking apps etc, I've only got four games: Yahtzee, Scrabble, Solitaire and another word game.

    I just can't seem to put the phone down and walk away.

    I really don't want to get rid of BH or Instagram but I guess I'll have to?? I'm currently in love with Yahtzee so play that a lot as well.

    I have an iPad but mainly use it for iBooks.

    I don't know what the answer is. I want to spend less time on my phone/internet too but when I'm bored it's my instant go to. I deleted the fb app a couple of weeks ago but I'm finding I just check it via the internet or my laptop instead. Sigh! I purposely never joined twitter/Instagram etc and I'm glad I haven't now. It's so hard to break a habit though, I think I need more hobbies tbh!!

    I use it too much as well and I've been cutting back lately. There are apps you can get that limit the time you can spend in nominated apps, I installed one last week but uninstalled it again as it was a bit buggy. I'm sure if you looked around you could find something designed to help you. I've uninstalled all my games and apps, I BH when I can sit at the PC, I FB through the browser and if I have time I install a game and carry on playing, but then uninstall it again when I've had enough.

    Bloody thing is totally addictive though!

    Get stuck into a good book.. Helps to pick something else up when you're bored. Just replacing one thing with another though really!

    What did you do to fill your time before you had a phone?

    It is tricky and I am positive there are many in the same predicament, hopefully someone will have some good advice for you

    I think we all need to connect with each other more. I think a lot of people are just lonely and need to connect somehow.

    I completely agree with @sunnyflower it's a connection thing! I was so lonely when I first had the kids, I knew no one in the area and the phone/net was a lifeline. Meetup is a great idea, or an evening thing at a local neighbourhood house. It doesn't have to be this massive cold turkey thing, just one step is a start. Even just one half hour a day when you ban yourself from picking up the phone.

    Can you disable the internet in your phone? If you can't connect and have to go through alot of steps to get online it might be a good reminder of what you are trying to achieve.??
    Otherwise try scheduled times for checking your phone.
    Leave it in a draw or buried in your bag and only check it on the hour etc. If there is no calls or important messages- walk away.

    It may just be as simple as breaking your habits and not having your phone next to you 24/7

    I started charging my phone on silent in the living room overnight. I couldn't get to sleep since little thoughts would pop into my head and I'd just quickly google or write that email - I couldn't switch off. But since I have to get out of bed to do it now- I don't bother. Also means I don't touch it till after I'm ready in the morning instead of reaching for it 1st think on the morning.
